वर्तमान में कंप्यूटर का उपयोग ज्यादा से ज्यादा क्षेत्रों में किया जा रहा है जिसका कारण उसमें बहुत सारी विशेषताएं हैं कंप्यूटर में कुछ महत्वपूर्ण विशेषताओं का वर्णन किया गया है
1. गति(speed)- कंप्यूटर के काम करने की गति जो होती है वह बहुत ज्यादा तेज होती है यह किसी भी कठिन से कठिन मैथमेटिकल ऑपरेशन को कुछ ही मिनट में कर सकता है उदाहरण के लिए किसी मैथमेटिकल ऑपरेशन जैसे के हम इसे कोई मैथमेटिकल कार्य करने को दे तो यह हल करने में ज्यादा समय नहीं लेगा ज्यादा से ज्यादा यह 2 या 3 सेकंड ले सकता है और उस कार्य को कुछ ही क्षणों में कर सकता है
2. स्वचालन(Automation)- कंप्यूटर में ऑपरेशन की प्रोसेसिंग ऑटोमेटिक होती है एक केलकुलेटर में यदि हम विभिन्न प्रकार की कैलकुलेशन करनी हो तो सभी ऑपरेशन हर एक बार बार अलग फीड करने में पढ़ते हैं जबकि कंप्यूटर में डाटा प्रोग्राम केवल एक बार फिर करने के बाद सभी ऑपरेशन ऑटोमेटिक रीडिफाइंड सिक्वेंस में एग्जीक्यूट होते हैं
3. सर्वतोमुखी(Versatile)- समाज में हरे क्षेत्र में कंप्यूटर के सफल उन प्रयोग इसके सब तो मुखी गुण का ही एक परिणाम है आधुनिक कंप्यूटर मैथमेटिकल फंक्शन के साथ-साथ व्यवसाय का मनोरंजन खेल कूद सूचना प्रौद्योगिकी आदि अनेकों अनेकों क्षेत्रों में स्वयं को पूरी तरह से सिद्ध कर चुका है
4. परिशुद्धता(Accuracy)- कंप्यूटर द्वारा दिखाया गया कार्य निसंदेह पूरी तो उसे परिषद होता है यह अपने कार्य को गलत ढंग से नहीं करता अपितु उसके द्वारा किए गए कार्य में कभी कोई गलती नहीं निकलती है तो ऐसा अवश्य ही मानवीय भूल का परिणाम होता है जैसे के गलत डाटा एंट्री असंगत निर्देशों का प्रोग्राम को समावेश
5. उच्च स्टोरेज क्षमता (High Storage Capacity)- एक कंप्यूटर में डाटा तथा इंफॉर्मेशन को स्टोर करने में अपार क्षमता होती है यह संख्या शब्दों को अपनी मेमोरी यूनिट में स्टोर कर सकता है जिन्हें हम अपनी आवश्यकता के अनुसार देख सकते हैं संपादित यानी के एडिट कर सकते हैं या फिर आवश्यकता ना होने पर डिलीट भी कर सकते हैं आधुनिक कंप्यूटर में किसी भी प्रकार का डाटा जैसे के चित्र ध्वनि प्रोग्राम मूवी आदि को स्टोर किया जा सकता है
6. कर्मठता (Diligence)- मानव के कार्य करने की अपनी सीमाएं हैं वे लगातार कार्य नहीं कर सकता एक ही प्रकार का कार्य करने से उसे उनका अनुभव होने लगता है वह अपनी एकाग्रता खो बैठता है इस प्रकार की किसी भी कठिनाई का कार्य कंप्यूटर से संबंधित नहीं होता वह लगातार बिना थके तथा बिना हुए कार्य कर सकता है इसमें उसके कार्य की शुद्धता में कोई अंतर नहीं होता कंप्यूटर के लिए कोई भी कार्य अरुचिकर या सुरुचि का नहीं होता यानी कि वह किसी भी प्रकार की बोरियत महसूस नहीं करता वह सभी कार्य को एक समान रूप से करता है

1. बुद्धिमत्ता का अभाव (Lack of intelligence )- उन सभी समस्याओं में जहां मानव्य सामान्य बोध तथा दर्शन की आवश्यकता होती है कंप्यूटर द्वारा हल प्राप्त करना संभव नहीं है वास्तव में यह केवल एक मशीन के समान कार्य करता है अतः मोड़ कंप्यूटर को मानव के समान बुद्धि माता का अनुभव होता है जहां पर की कंप्यूटर में कृत्रिम बुद्धि लाने के क्षेत्र में वैज्ञानिक नरेंद्र अभी प्रैक्टिकल कर रहे हैं इसमें सफलता मिलने पर कंप्यूटर की बुद्धिमत्ता तो में कुछ सीमा आ सकती हैं परंतु फिर भी इसमें माननीय बुद्धिमता की तुलना नहीं आ पाएगी
2. सामान्य बोध का अभाव( Lack of common sence)- कंप्यूटर को सीमा तक ही मानव के समान व्यवहार करता है परंतु जिस प्रकार कोई रचना अपने रचनाकार से बड़ी नहीं हो सकती उसी प्रकार कंप्यूटर तथा इसके निर्माता मानव में भी पर्याप्त अंतर है कंप्यूटर विचारशील नहीं है यह मनुष्य के सामान्य बुद्धि पालन करता है जब कोई कंप्यूटर में कोई कमी कार्य होता है तो यह सत्य है कि वह कमी मानव द्वारा दिए गए निर्देशों या डाटा में ही होती है परंतु यह सत्य है कि इस त्रुटि का जो इस कमी का हल मनुष्य द्वारा ही होता है कंप्यूटर ऐसा कभी नहीं कर सकता
3. भावनाओं का अभाव (Lack of Emotions )- कंप्यूटर में मानव के समान भावनाएं यह संवेदनाएं नहीं होती इसके माध्यम से हम अपने विचारों का आदान-प्रदान तो कर सकते हैं परंतु उन विचारों में नहीं भावना ही दिखाई नहीं देती उदाहरण के लिए हम किसी अपने मित्र को उसके जन्मदिवस पर ईमेल के माध्यम से शुभकामनाएं तो भेज सकते हैं परंतु अपने वास्ते विभागों को ईमेल में नहीं दिखा सकते
